The PRIDE Network decided to plan its next event in person. From 29 August to 1 September 2021 the PRIDE Master Class will be hosted in Durbovnik, Croatia.

For 3 days the PRIDE Network would like to work with a small group of 20-25 participants on the topic “Effectiveness of Doctoral Schools. Do they deliver key objectives in an efficient way?”. In many countries, structured doctoral programmes have become the standard, and Doctoral Schools set the framework for them. In the 2021 PRIDE Master Class, the PRIDE Network want to ask what we perceive the agreed purpose or objectives of any Doctoral School are?

Also, if 1) these objectives are appropriately addressed and 2) whether achieving these objectives is accomplished efficiently?

Due to the last one and a half years we all had to go through, the PRIDE Network would like to question, if Doctoral Schools have fulfilled their role of being a home and place of belonging, where peer exchange is encouraged and socialization as a researcher takes place, effectively and efficiently in this very restrictive climate.

Dubrovnik in its beauty is the perfect place to host the first live event again. Normally the Master Class is booked very quickly. But due to the travel restrictions in various countries, there are still some open spots.

The PRIDE Network is fully aware of the uncertainty in these times, even with vaccinations being available more and more. So, the PRIDE Network thought of two options for you to register/pre-book for a participation, even if you are not yet 100% sure, you will be able to attend.

You can either 1. register normally, and we give every participant the opportunity to cancel its own participation just before the opening day of the Master Class. Or you can 2. ask to be put on a waiting list spot, until you can work out, if you’re allowed to travel.

If you are interested, have a look at our event website: PRIDE Master Class 2021 and register here: Registration PRIDE Network

Department of Mathematics Institute of Information Engineering, Automation, and Mathematics Faculty of Chemical and Food Technology Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava Radlinskeho 9 812 37 Bratislava Slovakia https://www.uiam.sk/?lang=en

Brief Description of the Institution Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava is a modern educational and scientific institution. Since its foundation in the year 1937 more than 159.000 students have graduated there. In average, 12.000 students study at the STU every year. At present, STU consists of seven faculties that provide research in a number of research departments and several centres of excellence following a long-term strategy when the priority areas are biotechnology and biocompatibility; sustainable resources and development: energy and raw materials; sustainable resources and development: environment, landscape and urbanism; nanotechnology, nanosciences and multifunctional intelligent materials; information society technologies; life, health and environment; safety, reliability and quality. All the STU faculties provide study in accredited study programmes within the complex system of bachelor, master and PhD study. Faculties realise credit system compatible with the European credit transfer system enabling mutual mobility of students within European Union member countries and a larger European space. In the area of scientific and research activities the STU successfully joins European Union programmes. The Institute of Information Engineering, Automation, and Mathematics focuses on education, research, and applications in the following areas: uncertainty modelling, fuzzy sets and fuzzy logic, information technologies, optimisation and process control. Researchers from the Department of Mathematics are working in a world leading research group in the area of aggregation functions which has been formed in the last 30 years on the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava. Please tick the areas of research (as established in Marie Sklodowska Curie Actions) o Mathematics (MAT) – M2 Applied Mathematics

Research / Project Description Representation of a finite system of data by a single representative value is a problem arising in almost each scientific domain. The procedures for determining such representative value from given numerical values follow the properties required in the considered domain. The contemporary framework of aggregation functions is one of the examples. Nowadays, due to requirements of technical branches, a great attention is devoted to the aggregation of data represented by fuzzy sets and their generalizations. The basic property of aggregation functions is increasing monotonicity in each variable. However, there are many fusion techniques successfully applied in real data processing which do not satisfy the standard monotonicity constraint. In order to introduce functions extending/generalizing the notion of standard aggregation functions, the monotonicity was relaxed and the notion of fusion functions and subsequently the notion of directionally monotone fusion functions were introduced. As an application area of aggregation and related functions we mention image processing where the need of information fusion arises in almost every step, e.g., in fusion of intensities associated to a set of adjacent pixels, edges, structures, in image fusion, etc. It is often necessary to identify a possible overlapping between data to be fused, as well as to detect increasingness/decreasingness patterns in data. Directional monotonicity of fusion functions provides a very good tool for characterization of directions along which pixels vary. The above mentioned ideas indicate the goal of the proposed project: the investigation of generalized fusion functions allowing to process data belonging to more general structures (e.g. intervals, linguistic scales, bounded distributive lattices) with the focus on intervals. The more specific goal is to introduce the notion of interval-valued Choquet integral, to develop the corresponding theory and to apply the theoretical results in image processing problems.

Expression of Interest for hosting Marie Sklodowska – Curie fellows at Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava Interested institution: Institute of Information Engineering, Automation and Mathematics FCFT STU in Bratislava Radlinského 9 812 37 Bratislava Slovakia https://www.uiam.sk/?lang=en

Department of Information Engineering and Process Control of the Faculty of Chemical Technology of the Slovak University of Technology was constituted from the Department of Measuring and Control technique of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Slovak Technical University in 1962. Because of the specific control problems of the processes and systems in the chemical and biochemical technology, the specialisation Process Control in the frame of the study branch Chemical Engineering and Process Control has been established. Students and postgraduate students have been educated since 1964. So far, more than four hundreds specialists and almost forty PhD students have been graduated here and three professors and ten associated professors have been appointed. In 2006 the Department together with the Department of Mathematics established Institute of Information Engineering, Automation, and Mathematics. Please tick the areas of research (as established in Marie Sklodowska Curie Actions) o Chemistry (CHE), o Economic Sciences (ECO), X Information Science and Engineering (ENG), o Environment and Geosciences (ENV), o Life Sciences (LIF), o Mathematics (MAT), o Physics (PHY). o Social Sciences and Humanities (SOC),

Research / Project Description 1. Hybrid modeling and real-time optimization of processes Modern control architectures comprise elements designed to identify an optimal operating regime of the system, to reduce the uncertainty in key system variables by estimation using measurements (usually corrupted by noise), and to steer the system to the optimal operation regime by dynamic adjustment of available degrees of freedom. Despite these technologies being well understood, there are challenges to be addressed e.g., increased level of system complexity. One way of addressing the challenges is to combine first-principles and data-based modeling, i.e. to use hybrid modeling. As the data-based parts of models bear a significant level of uncertainty, which propagates through the whole control system and, thus, must be considered in the control design. Using the set-based methods, control values can be found to steer the system into an optimal regime in robust fashion while avoiding any violation of restrictions imposed by production quality or safety. The goal of the thesis is thus to innovate control system architecture such that the elements of the control system can exchange information about levels of uncertainty in the signals at their output and the acceptable level of uncertainty in the input signals. The project of the thesis will be finished with a successful demonstration of the developed techniques on a laboratory plant. 2. Set-based control of nonlinear systems As the computers and algorithms get generally faster, many new control concepts become tractable and can be developed. Set-based control is one of these, where the primary use of sets is in enveloping a space of possible evolutions of variables of a system over time. If these envelopes can be obtained in reasonable time, many properties of dynamic systems such as stability or robustness can be reasoned about. The first goal of the thesis is to build a novel type of multi-base set arithmetics that combines elements such as interval analysis, convex-set theory, and polynomial-functions theory to achieve the best trade-off between accuracy of representation and the burden associated with the underlying calculations to obtain the envelopes. The second goal of the thesis is to develop methods of synthesis of controllers that can be used for safe and reliable control of nonlinear systems. The project of the thesis will be finished with a successful demonstration of the developed techniques on a laboratory plant.
